Serbian President Vučić to Resign Before Campaign as SPS Party Announces Independent Election Run

President Aleksandar Vučić said elections in Serbia could be called within days or weeks and announced he will submit his resignation before entering the electoral campaign, arguing it will prevent the use of state resources and ensure fairness. He added he will respect the outcome of the vote and will congratulate any winning opponents.

Separately, the main board of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) voted unanimously in July to support Ivica Dačić’s plan to run independently in the upcoming parliamentary elections. SPS has not held talks with the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) about a joint list and will present its own coalition, United Serbia and the Greens of Serbia, with candidate lists due by late August.
