Serbian quince producers expect strong harvest after weak seasons

Quince producers in Serbia are anticipating a high-quality harvest this autumn following several seasons of lower yields. The fruit is in high demand, particularly from distilleries for brandy production, though it also has significant applications within the food industry.

In Tavnik, near Kraljevo, one of Serbia’s primary production hubs, harvesting is scheduled to begin in early November. Local growers report that the current crop features high sugar content, which is essential for distillation. Despite the positive outlook, producers face challenges including a shortage of seasonal workers.

According to the 2023 Agricultural Census, quince cultivation in Serbia covers approximately 3,096 hectares across 9,757 farms. While the sector shows potential for growth, it currently represents only about 1.6 percent of the country’s total orchard area, significantly trailing crops like plums and apples.
