Serbian settlements with unique or legendary place names

Various settlements in Serbia possess names derived from local legends, historical events, or specific geographic circumstances.

In the village of Nevada near Gornji Milanovac, folklore offers two explanations for its name: one involving a humorous encounter between a shepherd and a king, and another suggesting it distinguishes the inhabitants from nearby mining communities who extracted ore.

Other notable examples include Sladaja near Despotovac, reportedly named after a woman named Slada who died near Manasija Monastery, and Vraćevšnica, which is linked to legends following the Battle of Kosovo. The village of Zabava is believed to take its name from the Zabavica River, while names like Zlatav, Razbojna, and Ćelije are associated with historical gold mining and banditry. Additionally, the villages of Stopanja and Počekovina are linked to legends involving Karađorđe.
