Serbian student movement demands resignation of public broadcaster leaders

Following a decisive victory in Serbia's legislative elections, where the student-backed list secured 52.8% of the vote, the movement has demanded the resignation of the leadership at Radio Television of Serbia (RTS). The group is calling for the dismissal of the Director-General, the deputy, news editors, and the entire editorial team.

The movement accuses the public broadcaster of bias during the 14-year rule of Aleksandar Vucic's nationalist party. Specifically, they cited the unacceptable reproduction of insulting statements directed at students without critical framing. On election night, RTS reportedly ceased coverage of events in Belgrade shortly after Vucic acknowledged defeat, despite thousands of citizens celebrating in the streets.

This political shift follows two years of protests triggered by a 2024 railway station collapse that killed 16 people, an incident widely attributed to corruption. While the public station has not yet responded, the news director of another public channel in Vojvodina has resigned, and an NGO has urged regulators to revoke the license of Informer TV.
