Serbian President Vučić Announces Resignation at SNS Rally

President Aleksandar Vučić told supporters at the “Srbija jedna porodica” rally in Belgrade that he will step down in a few weeks and called for early presidential and parliamentary elections. He said the governing Serbian Progressive Party’s future election list will be called “United Serbia”. The rally featured a 500‑metre Serbian flag and a demonstration of humanoid robots. The Interior Ministry reported about 207 000 attendees, while the Archive of Public Gatherings estimated roughly 32 500 participants.

Student groups across Serbia organised counter‑demonstrations. In Kraljevo a “Everything is visible on Vidovdan” march brought thousands of students and locals, while in Subotica students staged an “Students win” action preparing for elections. The protests highlight the growing tension between the ruling party’s campaign and the student movement demanding early elections and reforms.

European Parliament members criticised Vučić’s vague resignation plan, warning that Europe must not repeat past mistakes. The contrasting attendance figures and the parallel student protests underline the political volatility ahead of the anticipated snap elections.
