Serbian tourists in Greece targeted by new SMS phishing scams

Greek bakeries in the north, especially in Thessaloniki, showcase the traditional pastry bugaca, a crisp, cream‑filled treat that tourists from Serbia often enjoy for breakfast. The recipe, featuring milk‑based semolina cream wrapped in thin phyllo layers, has become popular enough that media outlets share step‑by‑step instructions for home preparation.

At the same time, cybersecurity researchers at Kaspersky warn that Serbian holidaymakers in Greece are being hit by a surge of SMS‑phishing (smishing) attacks. Fraudsters pose as Greek government agencies, demanding payment of fictitious taxes or fees, and use links that lead to counterfeit websites designed to steal personal and banking data. Another tactic, "reservation hijacking," tricks travelers into providing credit‑card details to secure bookings that appear legitimate. Kaspersky recorded more than 8.3 million internet threats in Greece between Q3 2025 and Q2 2026, including hundreds of thousands of password‑theft attempts. Experts advise tourists not to open unexpected SMS links, to verify any payment requests directly with hotels or official portals, and to use strong passwords with two‑factor authentication.
