Students and academics protest education law reforms in Serbia

Students, parents, and professors in Niš held protests against proposed amendments to the Law on the Foundations of the Education System. Demonstrators argue the changes infringe upon the rights of students, teachers, and parents. Key concerns include the potential loss of autonomy for student parliaments, the reduction of the Parents' Council to an advisory role, and the ability of school directors to suspend teachers' licenses.

In a related development, the Minister of Education, Dejan Vuk Stanković, announced that the educational inspection ordered a repeat of the voting for the University of Belgrade's Statute changes due to procedural errors regarding online voting.

Additionally, five deans from the University of Novi Sad issued a joint statement calling for an end to repression against the academic community. They specifically highlighted the situation at the Faculty of Philosophy in Niš, where employees have reportedly faced financial repercussions, characterizing such actions as an attempt to discipline those who do not unconditionally agree with government measures.
