Serbian wedding traditions and religious fasting periods
In Serbian tradition, certain periods of the year are traditionally avoided for weddings, primarily due to religious observances. According to Orthodox practice, large celebrations and weddings are not held during major fasting periods, which are dedicated to prayer, abstinence, and spiritual preparation. These periods include the Great Lent (Easter Fast), the Peter's Fast, the Dormition Fast, and the Nativity Fast (Christmas Fast).
Beyond fasting, traditional customs also suggest avoiding weddings on major religious holidays and specific days such as St. John the Baptist's Beheading or St. George's Day (Krstovdan). Some regions also avoided the period immediately preceding major fasts, such as White Week.
It is important to distinguish between folk beliefs and official church doctrine. While folk traditions often suggest that marrying on certain dates might bring bad luck, this is not a teaching of the Orthodox Church. However, because church weddings are not performed during specific fasts, couples planning a religious ceremony are advised to consult with a priest to ensure their chosen date aligns with the liturgical calendar.
