Serbia's capital sees massive protest demanding early elections, clashes with police

Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in central Belgrade on Saturday to demand snap parliamentary elections and the end of President Aleksandar Vučić’s ten‑year rule. The rally, part of a movement triggered by the November 2024 roof collapse at a Novi Sad railway station that left 16 dead, was organised by student groups and has grown to millions of supporters across the country.

Police deployed tear‑gas and stun grenades as clashes erupted near Slavija Square and the presidential building. Officials said 23 protesters were arrested and an unspecified number of officers were injured. Protesters reported dozens of injuries among demonstrators, including university staff, who were taken to hospitals. Interior Minister Ivica Dačić warned that anyone who attacked police would be prosecuted.

The regular parliamentary elections are scheduled for late 2027, but the demonstrators view an early vote as a peaceful path to governmental change.
