Serbia's economic model criticised by SRCE deputy Slobodan Cvejić

Slobodan Cvejić, deputy president of the Serbia Centre (SRCE) party, said the current Serbian government’s economic model is wrong and unsustainable. He argued that the regime favours foreign investment through corrupt schemes, while neglecting domestic small and medium‑sized enterprises (SMEs).

Cvejić noted that foreign investors receive state subsidies that fully cover employee salaries for two years, a benefit not extended to local firms. He also criticised the timing of pension hikes, calling them a political tactic timed before elections. Public debt has risen by about €25‑26 billion since 2012 and continues at the same pace under the government of Đura Matsuć, meaning each citizen effectively adds roughly €20 of debt each month. Projects such as the “Jump into the Future” programme and the Expo complex were flagged for allowing purchases without tender, creating opportunities for elite enrichment while leaving the broader economy weak.
