Serbia's Generation Z Rethinks Retirement Savings
Retirement in Serbia often brings an unexpected emotional shift. Many new retirees report a sense of silence and loss of daily structure after leaving the workforce, describing the transition as both calming and unsettling. The lack of routine that once defined their identity can lead to feelings of disorientation, prompting some to deliberately create new rhythms to fill the void.
A recent J.P. Morgan Asset Management survey of Serbian workers shows that Generation Z is especially eager to retire early, with more than 40% preferring to stop working before age 65 and many aiming for retirement before 60. Instead of allocating funds to long‑term pension accounts, young employees prioritize travel, emergency savings, and debt repayment. Over a quarter have already withdrawn from retirement plans early, often to cover unforeseen expenses, while a majority express a desire for employer guidance on contribution levels. The study highlights a gap in financial literacy, as many lack a clear understanding of how much they need to save for a secure old age.
