Serdar Orhan elected Deputy Mayor of Ataşehir Municipality

Serdar Orhan, the candidate for the People's Alliance (AK Party and MHP), has been elected as the Deputy Mayor of Ataşehir Municipality in Istanbul. The election took place following the removal and arrest of Mayor Onursal Adıgüzel and his successor, Deputy Mayor Murat Güneş, amid investigations involving allegations of bribery and corruption.

The election process was marked by significant political shifts and tension. The Republican People's Party (CHP) and the YENİ Party boycotted the vote, choosing not to field candidates or participate in the session. This decision followed a series of resignations from the CHP, where several council members joined the AK Party, altering the arithmetic of the municipal council.

During the four rounds of voting, Orhan secured 18 votes to win the position. The election was held under heavy security, with police cordoning off roads leading to the municipal building. While the ruling alliance maintains that the process is a legal necessity to fill administrative vacancies, opposition members have criticized the developments as an attempt to overturn the will of the voters from the March 2024 local elections.
