Sere Kaniye displaced persons return via third convoy
A third convoy of displaced persons from Sere Kaniye has departed for the city's southern countryside. This latest group includes 511 families, totaling approximately 3,242 individuals, traveling from the Washokani camp and various shelter centers in Hasakah.
To support the resettlement process, returning families are receiving a financial grant of $2,000 each to assist with stabilization. Authorities are working toward a schedule of two convoys per week, with the goal of returning all displaced persons by the end of the year. Efforts are also underway to vacate homes currently occupied by others to ensure original owners can return to their properties.
Challenges to the return process include the widespread presence of landmines and security obstacles. While many are returning to rural areas, some Kurdish families face difficulties reaching their original villages due to the presence of Turkish military bases. Consequently, some families may temporarily settle in rented housing within Hasakah or other parts of the Jazira region until security conditions stabilize. To date, approximately 1,600 families have returned across the three convoys, though Kurdish returnees currently represent less than 5% of the total.
