Serena Williams denied singles wild card for Toronto Open, comeback on hold

Serena Williams will not compete in the singles draw at the Canadian Open in Toronto after the tournament used its final wild‑card spots for Canadian players. The 44‑year‑old’s return remains uncertain following a knee injury revealed after her Wimbledon appearance, where she lost in the first round and withdrew from doubles.

Tennis Canada Vice President of Communications Valérie Tétreault said officials are in daily contact with Williams’s team and are monitoring her recovery, keeping all options open. While a singles entry is now off the table, a doubles wild card could still be offered.

Williams’s comeback to singles competition was first seen at Wimbledon via a special invitation, but the injury that forced her to pull out of both singles and doubles there has delayed any further appearances on the North American hard‑court swing.
