Serena Williams to test form in doubles ahead of Berlin Open and Wimbledon wildcard

Former champion Serena Williams, now 44, will begin her 2024 comeback on grass by playing doubles at the Queen's Club Championships in London with Canadian Victoria Mboko, according to her longtime coach Patrick Mouratoglou. The pair used the HSBC Championships as preparation, and Mouratoglou stressed that the doubles event is a "controlled test" of Williams' ability to compete with the top players before any decision on a wild‑card entry for Wimbledon.

Williams is also scheduled to compete in singles at the WTA 500 Berlin Open from June 15‑21, following her doubles appearance at the London event (June 8‑14). A successful showing in Berlin could strengthen her case for receiving a Wimbledon wild‑card, which would allow her to enter the main draw of the Grand Slam.

The comeback marks Williams' first singles competition since the 2022 US Open, and her performance will be closely watched as she assesses whether she can contend at the highest level again.
