Serena Williams' use of weight loss drugs sparks doping debate

The use of GLP-1 class medications for weight loss has sparked a debate within the sporting community following revelations by tennis legend Serena Williams. Williams disclosed that she used tirzepatide—sold under brand names such as Mounjaro and Zepbound—to manage weight after the birth of her child, noting that intense exercise alone was insufficient for her weight loss goals.

This disclosure has raised questions regarding whether such substances should be classified as doping. According to David Cowan, an anti-doping expert at King's College London, a substance is typically classified as doping if it has the potential to enhance performance, poses health risks, or violates the “spirit of sport.”

While these medications are not currently prohibited in professional sports, anti-doping agencies are closely monitoring the situation. The debate centers on whether these drugs serve as legitimate health management tools or provide an unfair competitive advantage by altering an athlete's physical composition.
