Sergei Bobrovsky addresses rookie lap controversy
Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky addressed a controversy during the team’s season opener against the Montreal Canadiens, where he inadvertently interrupted rookie Gavin McKenna’s debut lap.
McKenna, the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, was scheduled to take a solo lap on the ice during warm-ups, a tradition for players making their NHL debuts. Bobrovsky stepped onto the ice ahead of the 18-year-old, briefly overshadowing the moment. Bobrovsky stated that the incident was an accident, claiming he had completely forgotten that McKenna was scheduled to have his moment in the spotlight. He noted that he later apologized to the rookie and joked that he pretended it was his own first game as well.
Separately, Maple Leafs General Manager John Chayka commented on Bobrovsky’s impact since signing as a free agent, praising the goaltender’s dedication and what Bobrovsky describes as a ‘day-to-day commitment to excellence.’
