Sergei Lavrov proposes UN Security Council expansion for Global South only

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called for the United Nations Security Council to be expanded exclusively to include developing nations from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Speaking to African media representatives in Moscow, Lavrov argued that current representation for these regions is an injustice.

Lavrov explicitly rejected the inclusion of Western nations and countries considered part of the 'collective West,' specifically naming Japan. He stated that applications from such countries should not be considered for new permanent or temporary seats. This proposal aligns with Russia's broader diplomatic goal of fostering a multipolar international order.

Additionally, Lavrov addressed regional security, alleging that Western nations, including France, are utilizing Ukrainian soldiers to conduct terrorist activities and sabotage in the Sahel region. He claimed these actions are intended to undermine Russia's growing economic and political ties with African nations.
