Sergey Lavrov criticizes Europe as mediator in Ukraine conflict
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that European nations have lost their credibility to act as guarantors or mediators in the Ukraine conflict. Speaking at a G20 press conference in Atlanta, Lavrov argued that European governments have a poor track record of upholding peace agreements, specifically citing the February 2014 deal between former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich and opposition leaders, which was brokered by France, Germany, and Poland.
Lavrov further claimed that France and Germany failed to ensure Ukraine implemented political reforms or granted special status to the Donbass region under the 2014–2015 Minsk agreements. He noted that former leaders Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande previously acknowledged that these agreements allowed Ukraine time to strengthen its military.
Regarding potential peace talks, Lavrov mentioned that Moscow would not participate in upcoming US-brokered negotiations in Abu Dhabi involving European officials. He also stated that if Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wishes to meet with President Vladimir Putin, he must travel to Moscow immediately.
