Sergej Novikov to direct Rimsky-Korsakov opera at Serbian National Theatre
Russian director Sergej Novikov is set to debut at the Serbian National Theatre (SNP) with a production of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera, ‘The Tsar’s Bride’. The premiere is scheduled for November 14 at the ‘Jovan Đorđević’ opera stage in Novi Sad.
This production marks the first time the opera has been performed in Serbia in a century. Based on historical events from the reign of Ivan the Terrible, the story follows the fate of a beautiful woman named Marfa amidst a conflict involving the Tsar, a young man named Likov, and the leader of the Oprichnina.
Novikov, who has previously worked at the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatres, praised the local artists for their attention to detail and dedication. Following the premiere, additional performances are scheduled for November 17, 19, and 21.
