German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held their first bilateral meeting in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The meeting, which lasted approximately 20 to 30 minutes, did not result in a diplomatic breakthrough, with both sides remaining deeply divided on key issues.

Wadephul urged Russia to abandon its “dangerous path of escalation” against Germany, Europe, and NATO, and called for an end to the war in Ukraine. He also pressed for the facilitation of Black Sea grain exports to address global food insecurity. Additionally, the German side addressed recent hybrid tensions, including a suspected drone attack at Leipzig/Halle airport.

Lavrov dismissed the meeting as unproductive, stating that Wadephul merely reiterated official German positions. He accused Germany of being a primary financier for Ukraine and attempting to become a leading military power in Europe. Lavrov also stated that Russia would veto efforts by Germany and Japan to secure permanent seats on the UN Security Council.
