Russia and Iran strengthen ties amid Middle East conflict mediation efforts

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited Tehran to meet with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The visit, Lavrov’s first since the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East, focused on strengthening the strategic partnership between Moscow and Tehran and exploring ways to mediate the ongoing crisis involving the United States and Israel.

Discussions covered a wide range of international and regional issues, including developments in Europe, Lebanon, Palestine, Ukraine, and Yemen. Both nations expressed a commitment to expanding economic and nuclear cooperation. Araghchi noted that the two countries have never worked more closely than they do now.

Regarding regional stability, Lavrov emphasized Russia's intention to prevent a large-scale war and to honor existing economic and investment agreements with Iran. Additionally, the two sides discussed the need to reduce tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan and to counter terrorist threats in Afghanistan.

In a separate development, Iran has proposed a seven-day initiative to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, contingent upon the United States meeting specific conditions, including the cessation of hostilities in the Middle East and the release of frozen Iranian assets.
