Sergei Lavrov warns Middle East is on the brink of full-scale war
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has warned that the Middle East is on the brink of a full-scale war. Speaking in Bahrain during the ninth GCC-Russia Strategic Dialogue, Lavrov emphasized the need to address the root causes of instability, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
Lavrov identified the Islamabad memorandum, a 2026 agreement between the United States and Iran, as a vital tool for returning the region to a diplomatic path. He criticized the approach of U.S. President Donald Trump toward Iran, stating it does not foster the conditions necessary for regional peace agreements.
Regarding the conflict in Yemen, Lavrov stated that Russia and the Gulf Cooperation Council support a political and diplomatic resolution between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi group. He also noted that Lavrov is scheduled to visit Tehran to meet with President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss maritime security and Persian Gulf tensions.
Additionally, Lavrov addressed the diesel supply agreement between Moscow and Washington, defining it as a bilateral matter between Russia and the United States, despite criticisms from Kyiv and some U.S. lawmakers.
