Russian Major General Anton Grunis killed in Ukrainian drone strike
Russian Major General Anton Grunis, commander of the 4th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade, was killed in a nighttime drone strike in the occupied Donetsk region on September 12. The operation is attributed by Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces commander Robert Brovdi to the 427th Separate Drone Systems Brigade 'Rarog'.
The death of Grunis, who was recently awarded the Hero of Russia Gold Star in late August, was confirmed by Russian commander Apti Alaudinov via Telegram. Grunis had gained prominence after reporting to President Vladimir Putin that his troops had captured the city of Kostiantynivka, a claim that both Ukrainian officials and the Institute for the Study of War disputed, stating the city remained contested.
This incident marks the seventh high-ranking Russian commander killed by Ukrainian drone units. Grunis, known by the call sign 'Grozny', had a long military career including service in Chechnya and Georgia.
