Sergio Canales discusses family trauma and career history
Spanish footballer Sergio Canales has shared personal details regarding his family life and career during an appearance on the podcast ‘El camino de Mario’ with former player Mario Suárez.
Canales revealed that his wife, Cristina Llorens, dealt with the realization of childhood sexual abuse during the period when he was playing for Real Betis. He explained that the family decided to move to Monterrey, Mexico, to seek a fresh start and find peace during that difficult time, describing the experience in Mexico as one of the best of his life.
Reflecting on his professional journey, Canales also discussed past transfer interests. He noted that he had visited La Masia with his parents because he wanted to sign with FC Barcelona, but his parents declined the move to avoid uprooting their lives. He also mentioned interest from Manchester City and various managers, including Carlo Ancelotti. Additionally, he addressed his difficult relationship with former Real Madrid manager José Mourinho, stating that while the experience of being sidelined was emotionally taxing, it ultimately helped him mature.
