Sergio Esteban Vélez appointed director of Instituto Caro y Cuervo

Sergio Esteban Vélez has assumed the directorship of the Instituto Caro y Cuervo, a prominent Colombian institution dedicated to the study and preservation of language, literature, and cultural heritage.

Known early in his career as the ‘niño poeta de Colombia’ after publishing his first book of poems at age 13, Vélez brings a diverse background to the role. His experience includes studies in Social Communication at the Universidad de Antioquia, postgraduate training in Canada, and work as a journalist, writer, and cultural manager. He was a recipient of the Simón Bolívar National Journalism Award in 2010 and previously served as Colombia’s cultural attaché in Switzerland in 2019.

In his new capacity, Vélez aims to strengthen the eight-decade-old institution and make its research regarding the Spanish language and Colombian culture more accessible to younger generations.
