Sergio Mattarella calls biodiversity protection a pillar of human survival

Italian President Sergio Mattarella has emphasized that protecting biodiversity is an essential condition for the survival of the human race. Speaking at the inauguration of the Terra Madre Salone del Gusto in Turin, Mattarella highlighted that genetic multiplicity has enabled human development for millennia, but warned that a lack of responsibility could lead to its destruction.

Mattarella called for structured political strategies to assign appropriate value to biological variety, preventing human activity from compressing these ecosystems to the point of collapse. He urged for a collective alliance involving farmers, fishers, cooks, and consumers to protect agricultural sectors and environmental health.

The President noted that while some previously dismissed warnings regarding environmental changes, the current decline is becoming unstoppable without urgent institutional and popular initiatives. He framed the preservation of biodiversity as both a civil responsibility and a crucial challenge for the future of humanity.
