Sergio Mattarella commemorates Marzabotto massacre anniversary

Italian President Sergio Mattarella issued a statement commemorating the 82nd anniversary of the Marzabotto massacre. He described the event, where Nazi SS forces and fascist collaborators targeted the civilian population in the Monte Sole area, as an abyss of inhumanity that claimed the lives of women, children, the elderly, and priests.

Mattarella emphasized that the memory of this atrocity serves as a warning and a call to responsibility. He noted that the foundations of the Italian Republic, democratic Europe, and modern social models are built upon the sacrifices made by those who suffered during such conflicts.

In his remarks, the President warned that the return of war to the European continent and the rise of neo-imperialist ambitions make the preservation of memory essential. He stated that a peaceful civilization relies on democracy, solidarity, and justice—the core principles of the Italian Constitution, which he noted was born from the very places where human dignity was once violated.
