Sergio Mattarella signs three individual clemency decrees

Italian President Sergio Mattarella has signed three individual clemency decrees under Article 87 of the Constitution, following favorable recommendations from the Ministry of Justice.

One decree was granted to Guido Gianni, a jeweler from Nicolosi, who was convicted of double homicide and attempted murder following a 2008 robbery at his shop. The partial pardon reduces his sentence by three years and two months. Having already served five years and three months, Gianni’s remaining sentence is now under four years, which may allow a surveillance court to consider alternative measures such as social service probation. The case has sparked public debate regarding the legal boundaries of self-defense.

The second decree was granted to an individual identified as A. A. (born 1972), convicted of drug-related offenses. This pardon addresses the remaining five years, five months, and ten days of the sentence, taking into account the individual’s grave and irreversible health conditions.

The third decree concerns G. B. (born 1981), convicted of drug-related crimes committed between 2002 and 2009. This partial pardon extinguishes one year and nine months of the remaining sentence, also considering the individual’s lifestyle changes and the health of a minor daughter.
