Sant’Anna di Stazzema commemorates 82nd anniversary of Nazi-fascist massacre

On the 82nd anniversary of the Sant’Anna di Stazzema massacre, Italian leaders gathered to commemorate the 560 civilians—mostly women, children, and the elderly—murdered by Nazi SS troops and fascist collaborators on August 12, 1944.

President Sergio Mattarella issued a message warning that modern conflicts are once again casting shadows on the present, noting that "wills to power and purposes of dominance are reappearing in even new forms." He emphasized that memory serves as a defense of democracy and civil rights. Giuseppe Conte, leader of the M5S, described the event as a premeditated terrorist action and criticized past attempts to suppress the truth, referencing the "cabinet of shame" where crucial documentation was once hidden.

The commemorations also highlighted local tensions; a group of youths chained themselves to a guardrail to protest the participation of Lucca Mayor Mario Pardini, whom they accused of being aligned with fascist ideologies. Other regional ceremonies, including those in Borgo Ticino and Florence, also honored victims of Nazi-fascist reprisals during the Second World War.
