Sergipe faces legal disputes over prison inspections, healthcare, and transport

Several legal and administrative developments are unfolding in the Brazilian state of Sergipe. The State Mechanism for the Prevention and Combat of Torture (MEPCT-SE) has accused the Secretary of Justice and Consumer Defense, Viviane Cruz Pessoa, of obstructing an inspection at the Copemcan Penitentiary Complex in São Cristóvão. The mechanism alleges that officials prevented an inspector and a guest specialist from entering the facility on August 18, with the prison director reportedly threatening the inspector with arrest for contempt.

In the healthcare sector, a federal court has ordered the Union, the state of Sergipe, and the municipality of Aracaju to implement a specialized reference service for rare diseases. The ruling requires the establishment of a comprehensive care network to ensure access to diagnoses, genetic exams, and treatments via the Unified Health System (SUS). The entities have 120 days to organize the care line and 240 days to implement at least one public health establishment, subject to daily fines for non-compliance.

Regarding public transportation, Governor Fábio Mitidieri has directed state and municipal prosecutors to analyze the legality of the Aracaju City Hall's unilateral decision to terminate its contract with the bus company VRS. The move has caused instability for approximately 400 workers and affected the metropolitan transport system. VRS has filed a writ of mandamus in court to contest the termination.
