Sergipe faces severe drought and water supply risks

Four municipalities in the Alto Sertão region of Sergipe—Canindé de São Francisco, Poço Redondo, Porto da Folha, and Monte Alegre de Sergipe—are experiencing severe drought due to El Niño effects. Rainfall in the region has dropped to 77% of the climatological average, representing a 57% decrease compared to the same period in 2025.

The drought threatens agriculture, specifically corn, bean, and cassava crops, while reducing pastures and increasing the risk of forest fires. Additionally, a dam in São Cristóvão has entered an alert state due to declining water volumes. The Civil Defense is currently operating 40 water trucks to assist with supply issues.
