Sergipe researchers test bacteria to reduce watermelon irrigation by 50%
Researchers in Sergipe are developing a method to reduce watermelon irrigation water usage by approximately 50% through the use of specific microorganisms. The study, conducted at the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS) in partnership with BiotechSe Biotecnologia Agroindustrial, focuses on Bacillus bacteria isolated from the Alto Sertão region.
The technology aims to increase plant tolerance to drought, potentially allowing watermelon crops to survive up to seven days without irrigation. Initial results indicate that water consumption can be halved without a decrease in production. If successful, guidance for farmers using these bioestimulants could be available by early 2027.
