Serhat Akpınar defends Northern Cyprus security against opposition criticism

Serhat Akpınar, General Secretary of the Democratic Party (DP), has criticized efforts to portray the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as an unsafe country. Akpınar argued that while crime exists, presenting isolated incidents as a constant, widespread security threat is inaccurate and serves to create a perception of fear and chaos.

Akpınar specifically targeted the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) for attempting to convene the Assembly General Assembly on a security agenda, labeling it a ‘political show’ rather than a constructive political initiative. He also rejected the term ‘accomplice’ used by opposition figure İncirli to describe the government, calling it an unacceptable accusation that exceeds the bounds of democratic criticism.

Furthermore, Akpınar emphasized that political rhetoric regarding security must consider its impact on the nation’s economy, social psychology, and international reputation. He warned against creating an ‘artificial climate of fear’ that could damage the country's global standing.
