Yeniden Doğuş Partisi withdraws from Northern Cyprus government

A political crisis has emerged in Northern Cyprus following a maritime disaster off the coast of Kyrenia. Prime Minister Ünal Üstel removed Erhan Arıklı, the Minister of Public Works and Transport, from his position to ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigation into a ship accident that has left at least 9 people dead and 19 others missing.

In response to the dismissal, the Yeniden Doğuş Partisi (YDP), led by Arıklı, held a Party Assembly meeting and voted to withdraw from the coalition government. Arıklı stated that the decision would be formally communicated to the Prime Minister in writing. Arıklı noted that he had previously advocated for early elections and described his removal as an opportunity he had been waiting for for two years.

The maritime incident involved a catamaran-type vessel belonging to Filo Denizcilik. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, supported by Turkish authorities who have dispatched a crash investigation team to the region.
