Serie A implements new refereeing standards and match rules

The 2026/27 Serie A season has seen a significant shift in refereeing standards and match dynamics. Under the direction of referee designer Daniele Orsato and new IFAB regulations, the league has moved toward a more physical and continuous style of play, aligning more closely with European standards.

Key changes include stricter enforcement of time limits for throw-ins and goal kicks to prevent time-wasting, as well as a revised approach to physical contact. Referees are being instructed to allow more play and avoid whistle-blowing for minor infractions, reducing the frequency of tactical fouls and interruptions.

Additionally, the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology has been scaled back, with instructions to intervene only in cases of clear and obvious errors. These adjustments have resulted in increased effective playing time and a more vertical, high-tempo game, moving away from previous seasons characterized by frequent stoppages and excessive VAR involvement.
