Serie A implements new refereeing approach to reduce VAR use

Serie A is undergoing a significant refereeing transformation aimed at increasing game fluidity and aligning Italian officiating with European standards. Under the direction of Daniele Orsato, the head of referees for Serie A and B, the league is implementing a new approach characterized by reduced VAR interventions and more effective playing time.

Data from the current season reflects this shift, with a notable decrease in disciplinary actions and penalty decisions. For instance, only one direct red card has been issued so far this season, compared to 44 in the previous edition. Additionally, the average number of penalties awarded has dropped to 0.05 per match. The new officiating style, often referred to as a ‘new refereeing metric,’ emphasizes fewer fouls and a more dynamic style of play.
