Series of road accidents shut parts of Sicily's A18 and nearby highways
In the early hours of July 3, a heavy truck collided with a guardrail near the Fiumefreddo exit on the A18 motorway between Messina and Catania. The impact damaged the safety barriers and blocked the exit, prompting police to close the junction and divert traffic as recovery crews removed the vehicle and repaired the rail.
Later that morning, three additional crashes occurred in the Siracusa area. One involved a vehicle on the SS114 near Melilli, while two more accidents happened on the A18 between Siracusa‑Sud and Gela, the latter between Canicattini Bagni and Cassibile. Rainy conditions were reported at the scenes, and several people were injured. Police and emergency services attended each site, cleared the roads and warned drivers to exercise caution amid the resulting congestion.
The combined incidents caused significant delays on the A18 and surrounding routes, with authorities working to restore normal traffic flow.
