Kiiraay party expands influence in Senegal through new alliances

The political landscape in Senegal is undergoing significant shifts as the newly formed presidential party, Kiiraay Les Patriotes Républicains, led by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, expands its influence. The party is actively recruiting members through grassroots mobilization in regions such as Mbacké, Kaffrine, and Missirah Sirimana, focusing on local presence and infrastructure concerns.

A notable development is the influx of former officials from the previous administration. Pape Mahawa Diouf, former spokesperson for the Alliance for the Republic (APR) and former director of the Senegalese Tourism Promotion Agency, has officially joined Kiiraay, citing a need for national unity and institutional stability. This movement is causing a redistribution of political strength, drawing members away from both the former ruling APR and the Pastef party.

Despite these gains, the party faces challenges in securing major urban centers. Currently, only the mayor of Tambacounda has officially joined Kiiraay among Senegal's fourteen regional capitals, suggesting that while the party is gaining traction in rural and departmental areas, its influence in large metropolitan hubs remains limited. Meanwhile, political tensions persist, with figures like Arona Coumba Ndoffène Diouf criticizing Ousmane Sonko, and religious leaders offering mixed assessments of the current political direction.
