Serigne Mbaye Guèye Syll, Mouridism historian, passes away

Serigne Mbaye Guèye Syll, a prominent Senegalese historian of Mouridism, passed away on Friday night. His death has brought mourning to the Islamic Ummah, particularly within the Mouride community.

Syll dedicated much of his life to researching and documenting the life and work of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, also known as Serigne Touba. His scholarly work, which began in the late 1970s, was noted for its rigor, particularly his use of colonial archives to trace the interactions between Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba and the French administration of that era.

As a lecturer, religious exegete, and author, Syll was a key figure in preserving the oral and written history of the brotherhood. His publications and widely broadcasted lectures remain significant resources for disciples seeking to understand the spiritual journey and history of Mouridism.
