Serious crashes close sections of UK's A1 and M1 motorways

A two‑car collision on the southbound A1 near Felton in Northumberland caused one vehicle to overturn. Northumbria Police said no one was seriously injured, though two patients were taken to hospital. The road was cleared by about 3:15 p.m., and traffic returned to normal. The incident revived calls to complete the dualling of the A1 stretch between Morpeth and the Scottish border.

On the M1 northbound in Leicestershire, between Junction 20 (Lutterworth) and Junction 21 (Leicester), a serious crash prompted the closure of both lanes. An air ambulance and emergency crews rescued at least one person, who was taken to hospital. National Highways issued a diversion route and expected the motorway to reopen in the mid‑afternoon.
