SERNAC conducts national inspection of child car seat sales

Chile’s National Consumer Service (SERNAC) has launched a nationwide inspection campaign targeting large department stores and specialized retailers. The initiative aims to ensure compliance with the Consumer Protection Law and Decree No. 176/2006 from the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications.

Inspectors will verify that retailers are meeting obligations regarding product information, mandatory labeling, and safety standards for Child Restraint Systems (SRI). The goal is to guarantee consumers receive truthful information and to protect the safety of children traveling in light vehicles.

Under Chilean traffic law, child restraint systems are mandatory for children up to 8 years old, or those under 135 cm in height and/or weighing 33 kg or less. Since May 2016, all child seats sold in Chile must also comply with current safety regulations from Europe and the United States.
