Serra do Espinhaço offers historical and ecological heritage in Minas Gerais

The Serra do Espinhaço mountain range in Minas Gerais, Brazil, serves as a significant hub for historical heritage and ecological diversity. The city of Diamantina, originally known as Arraial do Tijuco, stands as a preserved colonial site shaped by the 18th-century diamond cycle. Its urban layout is characterized by steep, stone-paved streets and refined architecture, featuring landmarks such as the Passadiço da Glória.

Complementing this historical landscape is the Transespinhaço, a long-distance trail spanning over 1,000 kilometers from Ouro Branco to Espinosa. The route traverses more than 40 municipalities and 53 conservation units, including several state parks. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the region acts as a transition zone between the Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, and Caatinga biomes, offering diverse ecosystems and high-altitude peaks such as Pico do Sol and Pico do Itambé.
