Serra dos Pireneus Mosaic established in Goiás

The Serra dos Pireneus Mosaic has officially been established in the state of Goiás, Brazil. Comprising 20 private reserves near the city of Pirenópolis, the mosaic aims to expand biodiversity protection and coordinate joint environmental actions.

The designation follows an ordinance from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change published in the Official Gazette of the Union. This initiative is part of the National System of Conservation Units, designed to strengthen integrated management in territories composed of various conservation areas.

The ordinance also establishes a Consultative Council featuring representatives from public authorities, educational institutions, civil society organizations, and reserve managers. This council will work to protect natural resources and preserve the region's environmental, cultural, and landscape attributes with a focus on sustainable development. The council is empowered to create technical chambers to discuss public policies and conservation studies. Additionally, conservation units not yet registered in the National Registry of Conservation Units have six months to complete the registration process.
