Serravalle Scrivia Library hosts event on Iulia Hasdeu

The Serravalle Scrivia Library will host a new cultural series beginning Tuesday, October 6, 2026, featuring journalist and writer Patrizia Ferrando. The inaugural event, titled ‘Iulia Hasdeu. La ragazza della Sorbona. Una ragazza fra Belle Époque e mistero’, focuses on the life of the Romanian intellectual and writer Iulia Hasdeu.

Born in Bucharest in 1869 to scientist Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu, Iulia was a child prodigy who could read by age two and compose poetry in multiple languages by age five. She later moved to Paris, where she became the first Romanian woman admitted to the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy at the Sorbonne. Her academic work and literary production, much of it written in French, spanned poetry and drama.

Hasdeu’s life ended prematurely in 1888 at the age of eighteen due to tuberculosis. Her works were published posthumously by her father, and their correspondence remains a significant record of their intellectual dialogue regarding history and philosophy.
