Serres court sentences 23 to prison for asylum center unrest
The Serres Single-Member Misdemeanor Court has sentenced 23 individuals to prison terms of 25 and 26 months following unrest at an asylum seeker reception center in Kleidi, Sintiki. The defendants, who are nationals of Bangladesh and Egypt, were also each ordered to pay a fine of 3,000 euros.
The convictions stem from an incident where inmates attacked police officers with stones and other objects, causing damage to the facility and its perimeter fencing. During the unrest, five foreign nationals were injured. While some inmates managed to cut through the wire mesh and escape, 15 individuals remain missing and are currently being sought by authorities.
The court ruled that the sentences would not be suspended or converted, and an appeal will not have a suspensive effect, meaning the convicted individuals are being sent to correctional facilities to serve their time. Two additional individuals involved in the incident were not tried in this session and will face trial following a referral to the Serres Prosecutor's Office.
