SeNaSa 2.0: Dominican authorities raid medical centers in massive fraud probe
The Dominican Republic's Ministerio Público has launched ‘Operación Senasa 2.0’, a major investigation into a suspected corruption scheme targeting the National Health Insurance (SeNaSa). The operation involves 37 simultaneous raids across the National District, Santo Domingo, Santiago, Cotuí, and La Vega.
Authorities have detained approximately 28 to 29 individuals, primarily medical professionals, including former hospital subdirector Gabriel Ravelo and gynecologist Dr. Puriel. The investigation also reportedly involves executives from two large pharmaceutical chains. The alleged fraud, which stems from the initial ‘Operación Cobra’, is estimated to exceed 15,000 million pesos, with some estimates reaching over 19,000 million pesos.
Prosecutors allege that the scheme involved large-scale bribery, double billing, and the use of falsified medical records. It is claimed that doctors received payments for services never rendered and subsequently returned between 40% and 60% of those funds to members of the criminal structure. The Ministerio Público has seized cash, vehicles, and weapons as part of the ongoing probe.
