SES provides satellite connectivity for flood relief in Nepal
Satellite operator SES is deploying high-speed Wi-Fi and satellite capacity to assist rescue workers in flood-devastated regions of Nepal. The initiative aims to strengthen communications between disaster response teams in remote areas and government authorities coordinating efforts from Kathmandu.
Because terrestrial infrastructure in Nepal’s mountainous regions may be damaged or inaccessible due to floods and landslides, the satellite connectivity provides a reliable link for voice and data communications. The Hong Kong-based PCCW and its local partner are responsible for providing the ground equipment and connectivity services required to leverage the SES satellite capacity. This support is intended to assist the Nepal Disaster Management Office in its efforts to establish emergency shelters, mobile hospitals, and temporary habitats for victims.
