Sestri Levante politicians debate gender-based violence prevention

Political tensions have risen in Sestri Levante following controversial remarks regarding femicide made by municipal councilor Paolo Smeraldi. In response to Smeraldi’s comments, which critics claim minimize violence against women, the Progresso per Sestri – Sestri un passo avanti group has filed a motion to establish a permanent municipal program dedicated to gender-based violence prevention.

The proposed program aims to foster education on respect and digital citizenship, targeting younger generations. It seeks to create a permanent territorial committee involving schools, local health authorities (ASL 4), anti-violence centers, social services, and various associations. The motion also emphasizes addressing digital violence, including online harassment, non-consensual sharing of intimate images, and abuses facilitated by artificial intelligence.

Simultaneously, the local Fratelli d’Italia party has criticized the city's leadership, questioning the mayor and female councilors and assessors for their response to Smeraldi’s statements. The party has called for accountability from local officials as the city approaches the second anniversary of a local femicide incident.
