Setúbal celebrates centenary of elevation to District Capital

Setúbal has launched celebrations marking the centenary of its elevation to District Capital. The festivities began with a historical parade and a reenactment of the 1926 proclamation.

Organized by the Setúbal City Council, the event involved approximately 500 participants, including municipal delegations, local parish councils, philharmonic bands, and various associations. The parade traveled from Cais 3 to Praça de Bocage, featuring figures dressed in period clothing who symbolically transported the Proclamation Edict.

The ceremony concluded at the City Hall with a staged reading of the December 22, 1926, edict, a reenactment of the inauguration of the first civil governor of Setúbal, and the performance of the National Anthem. Maria do Carmo Tiago, Vice-President of the municipality, emphasized that the centenary celebrates the people, communities, and generations that have shaped the district over the last century.
